Denis Piel was one of the most prolific and influential commercial photographers of the late 20th century. While on contract with Condé Nast, he created some of the era’s most seminal fashion and portrait photographs for publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Self, GQ and The New York Times Magazine. In 2011, renowned fashion stylist Polly Mellen said of working with Denis, “I was fascinated with his direction when shooting an image. He seemed to want to capture the off-moment… his pictures (were) cinematic… and, for me, captivating”.
Piel’s latest publication, FILMSCAPES, explores Piel’s photographic process, through his own eye. Specific photo shoots, selected by the photographer from his vast archive, are presented to highlight his distinctive cinematic photographic style. Juxtaposed against tear sheets showing what was originally selected for editorial publication, each shoot contains Piel’s personal edit, most of which has never been seen before. For the first time ever, Denis Piel’s iconic and historic fashion photographs are shown as they were originally conceived.
Piel conducted his photo shoots by shooting a complete storyline, using his models as actors. Piel sought to capture those intimate, private moments that occur in between pictures, giving the viewer a glimpse into a larger plot..
FILMSCAPES will be produced in both book and exhibition formats.
The First exhibition of this work opened on the 7th February, 2017.
